Middle Years programme

The Middle Years (MY) at UDIS comprises levels from Year 7 to Year 11 (11-16 years of age) and is based on the International Baccalaureate’s Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the National Curriculum of England (NCE) and is taught through inquiry.

UDIS is fully authorised by the International Baccalaureate to offer the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for Years 7-11. UDIS became a fully authorised MYP school in June, 2023.

UDIS combines the MYP with standards from the NCE for English, Mathematics and Science. The aim of the NCE is to provide an introduction to the essential knowledge that students need to be educated citizens. It introduces students to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement. The NCE provides an outline of the core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of student’s knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.

The NCE is divided into Key Stages which set out the required standards and expected learning for students on completion of each stage. For the Middle Years, these are Key Stage 3 (11-14 years old) and Key Stage 4 (14-16 years old).

The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP is a five-year programme and students who complete the MYP are well-prepared to undertake the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP).

The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. These are:

Each year, students in the MYP also engage in at least one collaboratively planned interdisciplinary unit that involves at least two subject groups. MYP students also complete a long-term project, where they decide what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, discovering what they will need to know to complete the project, and create a proposal or criteria for completing it.

UDIS is also an IB World School that is authorised to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP).
